Uganda Safari
4 Days Bwindi Gorilla Trekking & Lake Bunyonyi Experience
Meet mountain gorillas in Bwindi, then unwind on beautiful Lake Bunyonyi with canoe rides and island visits.
Itinerary overview
This four-day safari pairs the intensity of gorilla trekking with the calm of Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda’s most beautiful lakes. Its terraced hills and many small islands make it an ideal place to rest after the trek.
You begin with the long journey to Bwindi, trek gorillas on day two, then continue to the lake for a relaxed afternoon and canoe-based activities before the final drive back to Kampala.
The extra day at the lake is a gentle counterpoint to the physical trek, and it works well for couples, families and anyone who wants to recover before the road back. Bunyonyi also has a good range of bird species.

Day 1 Kampala / Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel or Entebbe Airport early in the morning, ideally by 6:00 or 7:00, for the long journey to south-western Uganda. The route heads through Mpigi and Masaka, then on towards Mbarara, with the landscape slowly changing from busy trading towns to open ranching country and eventually to steep, terraced hills.
Shortly after Masaka you stop at the Equator crossing at Kayabwe, where you can take photographs on the line between the northern and southern hemispheres and browse a few craft stalls. Lunch is taken at a restaurant along the highway, giving you a chance to stretch your legs before the final and most scenic section of the drive.
The last hours wind through the highlands near Kabale and into the forested hills around Bwindi. The total journey takes roughly eight to ten hours including stops, so arrive ready to rest. You check in at your lodge, enjoy a hot dinner, and go to bed early, since tomorrow begins with the park briefing.

Day 2 Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After an early breakfast you drive to the park trailhead for the briefing, usually starting at around 7:30. Rangers explain the rules of gorilla trekking, including keeping a safe distance, staying in a group and not visiting if you are unwell. Groups are limited to a maximum of eight visitors, and you are assigned to a habituated gorilla family.
The trek begins on forest trails, led by a ranger guide and armed escorts while trackers locate the family. Depending on where the gorillas spent the night, the hike may take one to several hours over steep, muddy and sometimes slippery ground. Porters can be hired locally to carry your bag and assist on difficult stretches, which also supports local families.
Once you reach the gorillas, you spend one hour observing and photographing them. You may see adults feeding, infants playing and the silverback keeping watch over the family. It is a quiet, emotional experience that most visitors describe as the highlight of their trip. You then hike back, receive your trekking certificate and relax at the lodge.

Day 3 Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi
After breakfast, you leave the Bwindi area for a scenic drive to Lake Bunyonyi, one of the most beautiful lakes in Uganda. The route climbs through steep terraced hillsides and eucalyptus woodland, with views over valleys and small villages. The drive takes roughly two to three hours depending on where your lodge is.
You arrive at the lake by lunchtime and check in at your lodge. Lake Bunyonyi, which means place of many little birds, is free of hippos and crocodiles and is safe for canoeing. Its twenty-nine islands rise from the water, and the shores are lined with terraced fields and quiet villages.
In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing dugout canoe ride across the lake, passing small islands and birdlife. You may visit Punishment Island, which has a sad but interesting history, or stop at a local village to see traditional crafts. You can also swim, read or watch the sunset from your lodge terrace.

Day 4 Lake Bunyonyi to Kampala / Entebbe
You can enjoy a slow morning at the lake, perhaps with a short walk, a bit of bird watching or a final canoe ride. The air is fresh and calm, and the views over the terraced hills make for good photographs. After breakfast you check out and prepare for the journey back.
The drive to Kampala or Entebbe runs via Kabale, Mbarara and Masaka, taking around eight to nine hours with stops. You break for lunch along the way and pause at the Equator for photographs and a stretch. Your guide chooses a rest stop where you can buy snacks, fruit and crafts.
You arrive in the evening and are dropped at your hotel or the airport, with time to rest. The safari ends after four days that combine the thrill of a gorilla encounter with a calm lakeside break. Your guide helps with luggage and confirms any onward arrangements before saying goodbye.
